Prevention and remission of type 2 diabetes

Summary
This guideline provides recommendations on the prevention, early detection, and early non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. It includes adults who are:
- at risk of developing type 2 diabetes
- clinically diagnosed with prediabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, impaired fasting hyperglycaemia or previous gestational diabetes
- recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
It excludes children and the not-at-risk general population.

This guideline will be of interest to healthcare professionals in:
- primary care
- weight management services
- psychology
- maternal health and diabetes specialist clinics
- care of people with cardiometabolic conditions.
A booklet is available for members of the public with an interest in reducing their risk of developing diabetes.
How this guideline was developed
This guideline draws upon recommendations from other high-quality guidelines. A multidisciplinary group considered each recommendation, and, if applicable, adopted the advice, or adapted it to the Scottish context. Further details of the methodology used are available here.
