Critical appraisal courses
One of the most important aspects of developing evidence-based guidelines is the critical appraisal of relevant research literature. In order to help guideline developers with this, SIGN offers courses in critical appraisal at two levels:
Introduction to Critical Appraisal
This course offers a practical introduction to critical appraisal for those unfamiliar with the evaluation of medical research literature, or with long dormant skills in this area. The key issues involved in evaluating systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials, and observational studies are covered. Key statistical concepts are introduced, but this is not a course in statistics.
Interpreting evidence
This course is for those with experience in the basics of critical appraisal and SIGN methodology, providing further training in more advanced areas of literature evaluation. It deals with the statistics involved in performing and assessing risk calculations, as well as with the evaluation of diagnostic studies. It also includes an introduction to the use of qualitative research evidence.
